A winning barn conversion in Dutton
Stanton Andrews was approached by the owners of this property in Dutton, to review the planning permission for the conversion of the barn into a family home, which had been granted prior to their ownership.
The original approved planning had a considerable number of shortcomings for the new owners whose revised brief was to convert the barn into a four bedroom family home, yet to maintain the character of the barn, with its exposed materials and great internal spaces.
The owners were eager to maximise on the fabulous views across open fields and valley. They were also keen to ensure that the internal character and scale of the barn was maintained in the final design solution.
The greatest challenge in a barn conversion of this type is the limited scope for external alterations and internally, managing the headroom below the ceiling trusses and beams. Our design solution was to create a bridge link with two metre headroom below it, and only a short flight of stairs to the bedroom between the exposed roof trusses. This ensured the headroom below the bedroom was still as high as possible.
The barn conversion successfully met the client’s requirements and the end result was greatly appreciated by them. At the time of completion it was also awarded the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) ‘best change of use of an existing building or conversion’.
