A traditional farmhouse that hides a contemporary twist
When Stanton Andrews was approached to remodel and extend this farmhouse in the Ribble Valley, the client wanted to create a home that was sympathetic to the original building with a contemporary twist. This was achieved by introducing large window openings and rooflights throughout the extension and encouraging views of the countryside.
The new multi-function family room has the kitchen at its heart, with dining and family sitting areas on either side. A small front extension with large sliding glazed doors provides views across open fields to the south and allows the family room to open directly onto the terrace and garden.
Materials were selected to reflect the original house and its setting, whilst detailing allowed for a contemporary twist. Exterior walls are faced in traditional stone which is carried through into the house creating an inside/outside quality to the space.
The roof is finished in traditional slate with lead detailing. Underfloor heating and an integrated lighting system enables the property to be efficiently controlled and managed without altering the traditional character of the farmhouse.
We used detailed computer modelling throughout the design process to help rethink and explore options and to aid the client in fully understanding how the finished house would look and feel.
