Creating a space for special care
Stanton Andrews was approached by the owners of this converted barn near Whalley, to create a more effective and usable space for their disabled teenage daughter, enabling significant improvements to her quality of life in the family home.
Stanton Andrews proposed an extension to the converted barn which dates back the early 1900s. This was achieved by removing a redundant barn adjacent to the house and opening up an area to create a new space which included a day room, sensory area and therapy room for the client’s daughter as well as carer’s accommodation.
The new space was linked to the main house with a fully glazed walkway, and included a lift to enable their daughter access to the first floor – an area she had previously never been. The design ensured her bedroom, on the first floor, maximised on the lovely views over their garden and surrounding countryside.
A new carport was included in the design and planned with a covered walkway to the house. The design incorporated recommendations from a qualified healthcare design expert, to ensure an adequate under cover area was provided for making transfers between wheelchair and car.
